‘The Icing on the Cake’ by Jennifer Gonzalez
This is the story of how one 24 year old had everything- promising career, boyfriend, graduate school and a brain injury stripped her of everything and reminded her what is important in life. This is the story of more than sixty surgeries and how there’s always room for yet another medical diagnosis.

What I’m most impressed by is the preciseness of this work. Although Jennifer has encountered such heaviness in her remarkable life, her writing never once reads as gratuitously sentimental or self-indulgent. Each sentence is purposeful, and if a story is told, it is told for good reason that ties in with the greater theme of the piece.
I was also struck by how Mrs. Gonzalez describes issues of identity throughout the piece, but especially as she is participating in a group session at the rehab facility. She almost sees herself from above and for the first time confronts a reality that questioned what she knew about herself, and how our self-perception is both more rigid and more fragile than we think – a realization that can bring you to your knees. It’s a great lesson, especially for those of us in the helping/service professions.
I laughed with her, cried with her, and learned with her. Great work!
