A Poet’s Trial?
Where do your ideas
Come from, poet?
___
I don’t know…
____
What do you mean?
___
I’m not sure…
____
Be honest with us, poet.
____
Perhaps, my ideas
Come from a higher power?
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
___
Maybe, it is the
Result of divine intervention?
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
___
How can you create
Poetry when you have
Degrees in Economics and Business Management?
___
I don’t know…
____
Are you crazy, poet?
____
No, I am sane:
I feel fine.
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
All I know is that
When the muse visits me,
Poetry flows from my pen
Like a gushing and cascading waterfall.
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
____
What about hard work,
Discipline and motivation, poet?
____
These ideas have
No place in my life.
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
I work based on intuition alone…
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
___
Do you know, poet,
That there are people
In this assembly with formal
Academic credentials in
Literature and creative writing?
____
I am aware of that, honorable judge.
____
And yet, you have
The guts to
Claim you are poet?
—
I am independent of their
Goodwill and understanding…
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
___
Quit poetry before it is too late.
____
To lay down my pen
Is to surrender life and living…
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
___
Go home, poet,
We have nothing more
To say to you.
___
Yes, your honor and
Respected members of the jury.
___
And, by the way, poet,
One more thing:
You won’t go far, poet…
We don’t appreciate your
Attitude, but you are free
To leave and live in a
Fantasy world and stew
In your own madness.
___
Thank you, ladies and gentleman.
___
One more thing, poet,
Your poems will reach
Our desks before your
Poems ever see
The light of day—
Keep that in mind, so
You do not have high
Hopes for what you
Claim is your creative flair.
___
Yes, Sir….
___
And, what is more,
Get a real job,
And become financially
Sound instead of
Catching flights of fancy
Or wallowing in self-pity.
Become a contributing
And respectable member of
Society and a good citizen
Like the rest of the human race.
___
I’ll think about it, Sir….
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
____
Now, get out, poet,
Before we have our
Security guards forcibly
Remove you from this
August assembly where
You obviously don’t
Belong anyway, foolish poet!
____
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
